Wong Kar Wai

December 5, 2011

The man is quite simply one of the best filmmakers we have today. “In the Mood for Love,” “Chungking Express,” “My Blueberry Nights;” the list goes on. He’s shooting a commercial for my friend Feroze in Jodhpur this week, so I hopped a flight in hopes of meeting the man. Wasn’t sure what to expect; I’d heard about the penchant for sunglasses and privacy, I didn’t know if he would suffer an American commercial director all that well. I needn’t have concerned myself. The man is gracious to a fault, and we spent several minutes chatting. I requested a snap with the two of us, he agreed and even asked his DoP to take the photo. Tonight I’ll climb aboard my flight back to States. I can do so with a feeling that my trip is complete.

Lovely romantic qualities, the music and shadows of “In the Mood for Love,” tres belle, tres Francaise. Film is a shared dream and we become players in it. No time has passed for the on screen immortals. They live in the screening room of our hearts. When a film student asked Woody Allen “How does it feel to know you will live on in your films?” he replied, “Actually I would prefer to live on in my apartment.” Thanks for ‘importing’ Wong to us in here in Hoopleville. These days not enough of the good stuff actually gets found in the commercial fire hose of what was called cimema. Where can critical comment of his work be found? I was hooked up when Kael and Gill slugged it out a hundred years ago. Nowadays, if we can’t get Denby we have to settle for LaSalle and Vizari. Thanks Tom.

I am so jealous that you got to chat with Wong Kar Wai, who is undoubtedly one of the directors that got me to fall in love with films and cinematography. I hope to work with you some day on Albert & Kim! keep me posted. I can even just help with the props and getting coffee, and you know, stuff like that. – the reporter from the fire scene 12/22/11.
